Spiritual Therapy

In the last year, I’ve “enjoyed” two kinds of robust, daily therapy. Last year I did a few months of physical therapy to recover from some shoulder surgery. This year, I get to try brain therapy, which is helping me recover from a concussion a few months back. All of this has made me think about the whole concept of therapy (a word that comes from a Greek word for “heal”).
Some of the things I’ve learned about therapy are super relevant for our spiritual growth & not just physical / brain therapy. Consider the following:

  • Consistent – doing exercises everyday is essential to getting better / well (growing in our spiritual life happens best when we are most consistent & daily)
  • Small victories – don’t belittle nor shame incremental progress; recovery is often a journey & not just a sprint (sometimes spiritual growth isn’t blatant & obvious)
  • Accountability – my wonderful family has been super encouraging to help me stay the course & not quit (church family & small groups come to mind in relation to spiritual therapy)
  • Constant improvement – seems to me that we either grow or we regress and the idea of treading water isn’t helpful

Let’s keep growing & doing our exercises, physically, mentally & spiritually!
Our spiritual exercises include daily prayer & Bible time, along w consistent community / fellowship πŸ™‚

When Pain Is Good

My physical therapist stretches my shoulder & that’s a nice way to say that she hurts me & sometimes I don’t like her, like today. I even used the breathing exercises with my children being born to manage the therapy pain.

But sometimes pain is good:

  • when it’s part of the path for improving & maturation
  • some conversations are painful because they’re working through hot zones
  • sometimes it hurts to get healthy
  • pain can be the process through which something new & wonderful is birthed

Not all pain is bad in the grand scheme of things πŸ™‚

Relevant Physical Therapy Lessons

I’m currently laying on my back having just finished another round of pt – recovering from shoulder surgery after dislocating it from snowboarding). Here are some brief take aways I’m learning that could be helpful for you:
*be nice, friendly & warm even when someone is hurting you – being mean just makes things worse

*take a deep breath & exhale – reminds me to pause rather than curl up in a ball to disappear

*stretch & strengthen – both good thoughts for growing in life

*laugh when you want to cry – pain can sometimes mean growing & improving

*be consistent & be present – half of the battle is showing up

*God knows your limits & God is continually present with strength & comfort

Consider that there could be some pretty cool common applications in both physical & spiritual therapy ,)

Range of Motion part1

I’ve been enjoying the adventure of physical therapy in recovering from a recent Shuler surgery & part of the adventure is exploring the limits of my range of motion – not so bueno. It seems like the muscles in my shoulder haven’t appreciated the recent intrusion & so they tend to get cranky & resistant, imagine that ,)

I think there’s some similarity with God & the range of motion we allow God in our lives. Perhaps we keep these limits because of:
*previous bad experiences
*a lack of trust
*resistance to new things / experiences – letting
*pain that come with change
*exercise that requires effort & work that can be uncomfortable
With these ideas & maybe a few of your own thoughts, let’s consider the possibility that we may have limited God’s range of motion in our lives & agree to take off some of the boundaries πŸ™‚
Watch some helpful ideas tomorrow about improving your range of motion with God πŸ˜€
