Walking and Talking

I revel in the experiences with God that have lots supernatural experience, demonstration and high octane impact!  It’s phenomenal when God does supernatural things like healing someone, giving a precise word of encouragement or insight, providing a supernatural funding or a colossal coincidence that could only be orchestrated by God.  I love these kinds of supernatural engagements and experiencing God’s fingerprints in our human existence!

At the same time, there’s much to be said for what could seem mundane in the simple walking with God.  I’m thinking about this in relation to my day yesterday that had some interesting walking in it.  When I think back over the walking I did yesterday, it had some very helpful experiences:

  • Destination – I walked a lot to get to various places like showing up for interviews, meeting with people, getting lunch, catching airplanes to get home and walking to my car in the snow. Let’s appreciate that walking with God is the incremental progress we experience with God, as we walk out God’s purposes and blueprint in our lives, one step and one day at a time.  Walking with God can lead us through all kinds of environments and encounters
  • Supernatural – in the midst of walking yesterday, I bumped into a guy whom I’ve never met and he proceeded to speak to me from God, telling me things that I’d only talked about in my solo quiet time with God. It was a really powerful experience for me, in the midst of walking to my next appointment.  I’m very grateful that God does supernatural stuff in the midst of what can seem mundane.
  • Communication – there’s much to be said for walking and talking, which I’ve found to be one of the best contexts for dialoguing with God. Indeed, when I was growing up, we used to sing a hymn with these words, “And He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own, . . .”  As I age, I find these words to resonate in my soul as a counter-point to the cacophony of noise and activities that try to overflow the divine limits in 24 hour increments.  There is much value for walking and talking with God throughout each day!
  • Heat – it was snowing and cold yesterday when I was waiting to catch the bus from the airport back to my car. The longer I stood in line, immobile, the colder I became.  So I decided to pace up and down the sidewalk as I waited for the bus, keeping warmer than standing still and turning into an icicle.  In a similar way, I think walking with God can keep us warm, active, compassionate and agile.  When we aren’t moving with God, maybe we can get cold, rigid and dull.

When we think about walking, it can seem to be something dull and easy to overlook.  However, let’s remember that walking and talking with God in our day to day living is a really powerful way to grow in knowing God better and more deeply!  Let’s keep walking and talking  🙂

True Confession

Presently, I’m making my way back home to Denver, from a very busy & productive trip to Cambodia & Bangladesh. This trip was productive for me in ways that I didn’t anticipate in terms of making some new friends & have some very rich fellowship with friends that I’ve had there for more than 10years. It was productive, as well, in loads of ways for Saving Moses & I’m still processing some of the developments, looking for God’s wisdom.
But here’s the true confession: when I start the journey home, I can be very unpleasant. By this point in any trip, I’m usually tired, spent & I want to sit on my back porch, yesterday. So if there are flight delays, airline people who aren’t helpful, or other small challenges, I can have a short fuse & it’s no bueno. So I’m sitting in the airport, having just heard the announcement that my flight is delayed almost 2 hours & there’s a chance I’ll miss my domestic flight to Denver. Despite how justified I feel to be hostile & obnoxious, I have a deeper anchor in my soul than my tired body & impatient feelings. The Holy Spirit is my helper & helps me to display the Fruit of the Spirit rather than the revulsion of the flesh. The first step to walk in these Fruits is to make the true confessions to the Holy Spirit & then ask for supernatural Help 🙂

Benefits of Waiting

I’m writing this in Indiana, as I’m waiting for a driver to take me to the airport. I was waiting earlier for an interview & when I get to the airport, I’ll wait some more to get on the airplane. Seems to me that we often spend time waiting for various things – stop lights, job interviews, school acceptance, for the right mate, direction from God & heaps more.
Sometimes it’s easy to get impatient in the waiting times. So here are some benefits to help you while you wait:

  • Waiting gives us the space to catch our breath & collect our thoughts
  • Waiting can be the prep time we need for the next season of busyness, activities & responsibilities
  • In Isaiah, it says that when we wait upon the Lord, He renews our strength & we all need supernatural strength
  • The best thing about waiting is the chance to have some focused fellowship with the Holy Spirit, our Heavenly Help

amazing travels

I’m presently sitting between 2 of my kids, Isbell & David, thanking God for the most fantastic family – seriously!  God is indescribably amazing.  In the past 1.5 weeks, i’ve been to Ethiopia, Turkey (quickie), Jordan & Israel.  The best part of all of my travelling has been the fellowship i’ve had w God – such richness, depth & tantalizing closeness.  Sometimes, it really helps my walk w God to get out of the daily routine, out of my comfort zone, & increase my dependence on God.

Ethiopia:  fantastic time with God, the orphanage we connect with & my friends.  The orphanage that we work with, over the last year, has really undertaken working w abandoned babies.  This was really touching, particularly as this is so close to my heart w the “saving Moses” campaign we’re launching w worldchild.  I also had the privilege of ministering in Pastor Eyob’s church in Addis & i can just summarize this by saying that my church family is now extended to include this church.  My time in Ethiopia has been rich in fellowship with not only family & friends but most importantly a rich depth with the Holy Spirit.  i can’t even begin to describe how completely riveting / captiving the Holy Spirit is to me, particularly during my time in Ethiopia.

Israel:  i joined the group trip w mom & had a great time getting to know some new people, reconnect w some old friends, share about God & see some cool places / ruins.  We visited Petra (in Jordan), Masada (in Israel), drove by the dead sea & then onto Jerusalem.  The group trip is going well & the travellers seem to be experiencing God in many different rich ways by being in many places discussed in the Bible.

Travelling:  i’ve been in lots of airports & on lots of airplanes – all total, in 10 days, i’ve been on no less than 10 planes & spent well over 100 hours on planes & in airports, to include 1 lost & now found blackberry. 🙂

if you’d like to check out some pics, pop over to my facebook & you can see some cool friends, places & experiences 🙂

Again, the best part of the last 1.5 wks has been the rich & deep fellowship w the Holy Spirit – the treasure of my life! 🙂
