give a shout

Ok, maybe not a shout but I’m interested to know opinions.  From God’s point of view, do you think all sin is the same OR is there a sliding scale from sin “lite” to “ultra heavy duty”?  Futhermore, is all punishment the same or does it match the sliding scale idea?  Let me know your thoughts & reasoning behind your thoughts.

Have a great day!!  🙂

P.S. I’m preaching on this a little bit tomorrow night

i think that in God’s eyes, all sin is equal. there is no difference, it all makes our flesh stink in the presence of His glory. it causes that separation. but, we have to deal with sin in very human terms. God dealt with it by offering a sacrifice. we are no longer separated from Him, but we still have to deal with our humanity. in our humanity, murder is worse than a lie, adultery is worse than theft. the former of these have greater impact on society and hurt more people. so, we have to deal with it as such. God, however, has dealt with it all on one level and will deal with again when we reach the judgment seat, whether it be murder, theft, adultery or even a lie.
james 2:10 “for whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”
my thoughts, MHO (my humble opinion)

Since my beautiful wife so graciously answered the first part of your question, I will answer the second on degree of punishment. The answer is absolutely there are degrees. Scripture shows that we are judged based on our status with God, but also shows a judgment based on works. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10, “So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
You also see the same idea in 1 Corinthians 4:5, where we see God will check the motives behind the hearts of men and man will “receive his praise from God.”

I think that God views us and our actions as equal. However, the earthly consequences of sin differ.

I think sin to God is all the same, however, to the individual and how we deal with it it is very different. This is a lack of understanding God’s grace I believe.

I think punishment to God is the same also, either you know Him or you don’t, Heaven or Hell. The devil however will play all kinds of evil with your mind about punishment now and, should you choose to stay with him, eternally.

Just my 1or2thoughts. Good questions.

I used to think that not all sin was equal until I read (just 2 nights ago) the scripture that Teresa pointed out. The earthly consequences differ though…we see that with our natural eyes.
