Heavenly Help

Looking for Love

I think it’s part of our human experience to have a desire to be loved. We want to be valued, appreciated, recognized, affirmed . . . . not only for what we do, our looks, our talents, achievements & more. We went to be loved for who we are.
While I’m more than grateful for the many wonderful people who have been in my life from infancy until today, let’s be very certain that we’ll never find anyone who loves us with such purity & holiness as our Heavenly Father.

Today being Good Friday, this reminds us more than other day that the Triune God loves us. Today, we honor Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice of dying on the cross for us, a brutal, gruesome & barbaric death in contrast to the most pure & undefiled love ever expressed throughout the entirety of human history.

It is indeed a Good Friday to know that God loves us all the way through human depravity & death. You don’t have to keep looking for love. Let the Holy Spirit pour love into your heart, Romans 5:5

Gethsemane Before Easter

Take a moment to think of a dark time you have experienced. Maybe you went through a challenging time in your health or with a loved one. Maybe you went through a painful divorce or financial situation that seemed hopeless. All of us have had our share of dark times & we don’t like them.
I totally appreciate that Jesus had dark experiences as well – the devil tempting Jesus during His 40day fast comes to mind. In this Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday, today is Maundy Thursday, the day of Jesus’ Last Supper & the evening when He went to Gethsemane.

If you’re presently in a dark time, or you know someone who is struggling in a difficult situation, take heart! Here are some thoughts that’s could help:

  • Jesus went through dark seasons & is acquainted with our struggles – Jesus keeps company with us in the darkness
  • To every season there is a limit – this has come to pass & not stay
  • Intimacy often grows deeper in situations of duress & struggle, so maybe this is why Jesus wanted Peter, James & John to keep company with Him in Gethsemane – don’t be repelled by someone’s dark season (Matt 26:36-38)
  • Remember that Jesus is the Light of the world & brings illumination wherever He is invited!

Easter is coming – that means there’s resurrection around the corner! And Heavenly Help gives us strength & wisdom to keep going!

Lessons from Airport Meltdowns

I’ve had my share of airport meltdowns. I still feel sorry for the poor flight agent who got an earful from me about my luggage being small enough to fit in the overhead bin. Then there was the recent dude who wanted to weigh my carry on luggage – no need to give much animation to that exchange. And yesterday, I was hostile with the guy who made my salad because he gave me the wrong salad dressing. As much as I’d like to explain & justify my behavior, it is neither excusable not justified, full stop.
So here are my lessons that you might find helpful sometime:

  • With the Holy Spirits help, there’s always more patience than pressure.
  • Check your attitude – it’s too expense nowadays to bring extra luggage
  • Keep grace & poise in good form: practice, practice, practice
  • Watch the monitors: keep alert to your thoughts & anxieties, sometimes they can seep out
  • Get in the right line: bypass those cranky conversations & opt to bring peace & abundant forgiveness.

Traveling these days affords me ample opportunities to walk the talk 🙂

Get some Heavenly Help no matter where you are in your journey!

Doing Right

This morning I read how Joseph resisted the invitations of Potipher’s wife. Potipher was Joseph’s employer & Joseph didn’t want to dishonor his employer nor sin against God by giving into the wife’s seductions. In some respects, it might have been easy for Joseph to cave: Joseph was away from his family, he was a slave, maybe they could’ve kept their trist a secret & maybe there was some appeal to his flesh, on the most basic level. Nonetheless, Joseph kept his integrity & consistently rejected the wife’s efforts.
In my thinking, Joseph should have been rewarded for holding the high ground but instead, he was lied about & then thrown into prison. So now he’s not a slave but maybe worse, he’s a “convict”.  God rewarded Joseph in prison & previously under Potipher by giving Joseph favor & leadership positions.

But the immediate imprisonment result wasn’t the optimum outcome for maintaining a high level of integrity.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Do the right thing even if the immediate results seem to backfire
  • Keep pure motives to serve & be a blessing
  • Make sure your forgiveness stays fresh

I think all of this was practice for the real work of keeping a nation from being eradicated from a severe 7 years famine along with rescuing his entire family from starving to death 🙂

Do the right thing 🙂

Fun Thoughts About Spring

Spring is a wonderful season! Ive noticed some little buds on the trees & flowers poking through the cold earth. Spring is like a celebration of life in contrast to the dormancy of Winter. A few things to thing about today:

  • Spring Forward: time to get moving! Shake off the Winter hibernation & LETS GO! Gal 6:9
  • Spring Cleaning: be sure that you take some time to clean out the cobwebs & in particular celebrate Resurrection. Perhaps it’s time to get rid of some dead weight – Heb 12:1
  • Spring Break: I love that there’s this thing called Spring Break. It helps me to remember that in all of the Spring flurry of activities, it’s still important to rest! Matt 11:28

A Murky Middle

Middle: Jacob, Isaac’s son, was in quite a difficult situation for 20years. In these years, he worked for a deceptive employer who also became his father inlaw when Jacob married Leah & then Rachel. The remaining 6years that Jacob stayed w Laban, he took care of Laban’s flocks & over the course of the 20year employment relation, Laban changed his wages 20times.
Beginning: These 20 years were on the heels of a family conflict about Jacob running away from home, having stolen his brother’s blessing & birthright.

Ending: Once Jacob left Laban, he had to confront his brother who was threatening to kill him 20years earlier when Jacob ran away from home.

I totally understand that Jacob had made poor decisions & lived with the consequences.  Nevertheless, there were 20years when Jacob lived in a messy & likely stressful situation.

So what should we do in murky, messy & stressful situations? Here are some helpful ideas (feel free to share this with some friends that could find it helpful):

  • Keep your integrity no matter what happens around you – Jacob certainly had more than his share of shifty, but with Laban, he kept things pretty truthful to the best we know
  • The middle is exactly that: not the beginning & it will end – seasons can be constructive even though challenging
  • Keep you eyes on Jesus – Jacob acknowledged that if God hadn’t been with him during his Laban years, things could’ve been much worse!
  • Work hard – sometimes it tempting to get complacent or discouraged in difficult times, which can be draining & tiresome. Keep working & trust God to being something magnificent out of the murky 🙂

Don’t forget to order Heavenly Help – super great resource to help us in the middle ,)

The Good Side of Fear

“Do it scared!!” I’ve used this mantra on more than one occasion: snowboarding, my first triathlon, meeting important people, various travel experiences, etc. In my early 20s, my dad was massively helpful to me in dealing with fear – coaching me about not letting fear control me or make my decisions.

I most certainly don’t want to be controlled by fear, but here’s the good part of fear: fear can be helpful to inform us, but debilitating if we let it control us.

In Prov 9:10, it says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom & my friend, we need as much wisdom in our lives as we can possibly hold! Let’s allow the fear of the Lord guide our decisions & organize our priorities!

No Line

Yesterday, I did my weekly grocery shopping. I usually avoid the Sunday shopping gauntlet because of the lines & lengthened time it takes to accomplish this task. I was of course not surprised to find the check out lines totally overflowing, so I shiftedinto

patient mode & decided to chill out for the wait. Being impatient only makes the line longer & the wait more unpleasant. If you’re like me, you probably do lots of stuff to avoid lines, but here could be some helpful thoughts on this topic:

  • A line is a place of demarcation & can represent a change of mind & behavior – the proverbial “line in the sand”
  • Waiting in a line is a good discipline for developing patience, something we all need
  • A line helps me appreciate incremental progress rather than monstrous leaps

Heavenly Help is always good for line management ,)

Walking in Uncertainty

I think that most of us like to have a plan & know what’s happening, not only in our day to day activities but also in some longer time perspectives. This was a challenge that Jacob had, having served his father-in-law, Laban, for 20 years. There was a lot of stability & safety for Jacob as he worked for Laban, with of course some hotspots to navigate (deception, wage changes, etc). But there was a time for Jacob to move his family away from Laban & back to his homeland, but not without some tricky conversations & exchanges. It seems to me that absolutely there was uncertainty & instability in Jacob’s family in this season.
So how do we walk in seasons of uncertainty? Here are a few suggestions:

  • pray a lot
  • determine to get better at trusting God (Prov 22:19)
  • keep your focus on God & not only the circumstances or people
  • keep moving – don’t get quagmired in fear, analysis or distractions

Of all things, be sure to stay in step, on pace, with the Holy Spirit!!
