Do you like otters? They seem to be a party wherever they go with lots of humor, energy and a playfull mindset! I’ve always enjoyed watching them, maybe because I bend toward a serious nature & the contrast is refreshing!
Otters remind me that there’s a playful side to wisdom, from Proverbs 8:30-31. In these verses, you can also replace the word rejoice with the word play since the word in Hebrew is used both ways:
Then I [Wisdom] was beside Him, as a master workman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, Rejoicing in the world, His earth, And having my delight in the sons of men.
Sometimes we would be wise to lighten up and be a little playful! Here’s a joke that could help:
What’s the one vegetable Noah refused to bring on the ark?
Last night, our church had our first alternative to the alternative Halloween celebration. Normally, we have the annual “harvestfest” where families can bring their kids for a safe alternative to Halloween. Last night, we decided to go rogue & try something new. As you can see from the picture, it was seriously FUN!!!!!!
Here are some possible ways to add some fun in your life:
laugh at yourself: less serious & more levity 🙂
tell goofy jokes: what do you get when you mix a rabbit & a snake? a jump rope ,)
do something different: sometimes the status quo can get stale
focus: look up and look around rather than looking down & inside 🙂
stay positive: pessimism requires more energy to manage than optimism
When I was growing up, people used to observe that I was very serious. As a little kid, I was always thinking about learning, growing & being mature. I didn’t like it when restaurants would have “kiddie” menus because I thought that was condescending. Suffice it to say that I was super serious.
Now days, I’m not quite so serious & probably what I most like to laugh at is myself. I take myself far less seriously now & I think that a healthy dose of humorous humility is very constructive for lots of different reasons. I also like to laugh with my kids – one of whom just pulled out an empty Starbucks gum tin from inside his footie pjs, leading me to 2 questions: what else might he keep in his footie pjs & why does his keep the gum tin in his pjs???
So I’d encourage you to laugh today, look for ways to enjoy the diversity of people, encourage others & find a few constructive ways to take yourself less seriously 🙂
