Recognizing Jesus

On the heals of Easter, it’s tempting to move on to what’s next.  Stuff such as Spring cleaning, Mother’s Day, graduation prep, etc can require our attention so much that Easter could quickly be forgotten.  But let’s keep in mind that after Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to folk unexpectedly.  And maybe it was difficult to recognize Jesus because there was lots of emotional intensity that made recognition more difficult.  Here are a few emotions that maybe cause us to struggle to recognize Jesus:

  • fear:  the disciples huddled together in fear after Jesus’ death.  Jesus appeared to them despite their fear
  • grief:  maybe it was difficult for Mary Magdalene to recognize Jesus in the Garden after His resurrection because grief was so overwhelming.  Jesus appeared to her, nonetheless
  • uncertainty:  on the road to Emmaus, some of Jesus followers were trying to figure out what had just happened after His crucifixion and “disappearance.”  Jesus walked with them on their journey and helped them understand what just happened
  • doubt:  Thomas was missing when Jesus made His first appearance to the disciples after His resurrection.  Jesus came back to untangle Thomas’ doubt.

Let’s keep looking for Jesus because we can find and experience Him everyday because He’s alive!

In the Middle

Death is the pre-requisite for resurrection & today is that middle ground. Death happened on Good Friday & resurrection happens tomorrow. But the disciples didn’t know that Jesus would raise tomorrow, no matter how much He told them. And they knew He was dead with lots of uncertainty on the horizon. This is often how the middle feels – uncertain & tenuous.
I don’t think there’s anyone who is reading this now who isn’t in some middle place in life. We can find ourselves in the middle of: schooling, fighting a disease, a financial crisis, a relationship challenge, a difficult decision & heaps more.
So what do we do in the middle? Here are some suggestions that could be helpful:
1 – community: the disciples held together when they found themselves in the middle & waiting for what was next
2 – faith focus: let’s keep our attention on God who works all things together for our good, as we stay in love with Him
3 – purposeful farming: be sure to plant healthy seeds like patience, gratitude, diligence & others since we will reap what we sow 🙂

Sunny Days

I always think that Easter is a sunny day, but in Colorado, that’s not always true. Our weather can be quite unpredictable, regardless of the weathermen & their best forecasts.
No matter what the clouds do, we can have light in our hearts because Jesus is the light of the world. And celebrating His resurrection this weekend, is the exclamation point to living in light & love! I can totally appreciate that we go through seasons & struggles that can darken our mindset or discourage our hearts. But let’s remember that Jesus, the light of the world, lives in our hearts & His lights can illuminate any darkness or discouragement in which we may find ourselves. Today can be a sunny day my friend 🙂

Holy Week

Resurrection is just around the corner & I’m SO EXCITED!!!! And the Biblical events of this week all point to Easter, a time of celebrating life triumphing over death. As Jesus walked through this week, He was intentional to facilitate connection, defy religious traditions & ground His disciples in their relationship w Him.
Please take a quick moment to watch & share this video with your friends!

The End of Death

Happy Spring Break! Although it snowed last night in Denver, I know that Spring is soon to overtake Winter so I’m celebrating the conclusion of Winter! Winter seems to be when life hibernates & sometimes ceases. But Spring reminds me that life is always present, even when it seems dormant or unseen.
Spring is also the season for Easter when we celebrate resurrection – life springing from what’s dead. When I think about it, Holy Spirit is an essential for life. Indeed, Romans 8:11 tells us that Holy Spirit was responsible for Jesus’ resurrection & let’s not forget that man became alive when God breathed His Spirit into human shaped clay on Genesis 2. Furthermore, Pentecost happened in the Spring, so let’s be certain to welcome Holy Spirit into our hearts, decisions, outlook, desires & any place on our lives that is dead. With Holy Spirit, resurrection is on the horizon!

That’s Weird!!

“And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth and his eyes on his eyes and his hands on his hands, and he stretched himself on him; and the flesh of the child became warm.  35 Then he returned and walked in the house once back and forth, and went up and stretched himself on him; and the lad sneezed seven times and the lad opened his eyes.”  2 Kings 4:34-35

When I read these verses about Elisha raising this boy from the dead, what Elisha did sounds really strange to me, but I certainly celebrate the outcome!  Weird actions in contrast to resurrection outcomes cause me to pause & reflect.  Far too often, I’m quick to dismiss or reject stuff that makes me squeamish just to concentrate on the cool outcomes that I like.  Do you ever find yourself making the same kind of decision?

Regardless of your answer, I’m entirely certain that the mother of the boy who was raised from the dead didn’t mind the method Elisha used to resurrect her son.  Sometimes God’s methods can make us squeamish, but let’s never belittle nor dismiss God’s motives (genuine love) nor the outcomes, for the sake of being more comfortable & less squeamish 🙂

Whose Clothes?

I’m not sure whose shirt I’m wearing today – I just know it kind of matches my skirt. The reason I don’t know whose shirt this is, is because almost all of my kids are now adult-size, so our clothes are easy to mixup. In some respects, it’s nice to have access to the extra clothing, but it’s challenging when I cant find my own clothes.
So I wonder if we don’t realize sometimes that we’re wearing the wrong clothes – grave clothes instead of resurrection garb. I say this because we live in a fallen world which overflows with death, despondency, darkness & futility. Sometimes, this kind of thinking can rub off on us, unknowingly, and then we walk around wearing the same mindset as the world around us.
Let’s be sure that we wear the resurrection clothing that Jesus provides & not the drab & droll grave clothes of the common thinking in the world around us!

First to Worst

I live in Denver & our baseball team, the Rockies, are plummeting by the day from first to worst. It’s disheartening to watch them & I can’t help but wonder if Jesus’ disciples were a little jittery about Him cleansing the Temple, immediately upon His triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. The Temple cleaning wouldn’t be the best way to win friends & positively influence key leaders. But this was the first thing Jesus chose to do, upon His wildly popular entrance.
Clearly, there are plenty of gaps comparing Jesus’ triumphal entrance & my baseball team.
But I wonder if Jesus’ disciples didn’t watch Jesus’ crucifixion with shock & awe. “How did we get to this appalling conclusion in such a few short days?” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the Bible says that the entire city was stirred up & in less than 5 days, Jesus was hanging on a cross, the most barbaric punishment humans could contrive at that time. How could Jesus go from first to worst?
And then resurrection???
Let’s never take human events as the final conclusion nor permanent solution when we invite the Holy Spirit to join our journey. Indeed, when we walk with the Holy Spirit, the potential for resurrection defies our human perspective & limits!

Do You Want Resurrection?

Here’s the truth: I’m selfish, impatient, insensitive, unforgiving, unkind, irreverent, apathetic & heaps more ugly things. While I don’t want to behave in these ways, nonetheless, the bad that I don’t want to do is what I often wind up doing. And the good that I want to do, I don’t often do. I want to live in resurrection & not my deplorable humanity. So what’s the answer?
The answer to living in resurrection is to be crucified with Christ – Galatians 2:20. Indeed, there were two men crucified with Christ. One man mocked Jesus with the rest of the bystanders & one man recognized Jesus for who He is, the sinless Son of God.
So on this Good Friday, I chose to join Jesus on the cross, crucifying my flesh so that Jesus resurrected life can flow through my daily living. When I live the crucified life, then I’m unselfish, patient, sensitive, forgiving, kind, reverent & ultimately, genuine love is my default nature! Anyone care to join me in the crucified life so Jesus’ resurrection can live through us?

Get RUDE!!

I don’t like rude people & I’d like to keep a wide berth from insensitive folk. But Jesus was rude & rude on more than one occasion. I think the pinnacle of Jesus’ rude behavior was when He cleaned out the temple on Holy Week. He overturned tables, made a whip & offended lots of important people with His house cleaning activities. More than a few people thought Jesus was rude & they didn’t appreciate His challenging words & behaviors.
I think that there are times when we get offended with Jesus as well. More to the point, our flesh objects to His gruff & confrontational behavior. And maybe that’s the point – either our flesh rules us or Jesus is our Lord, but we can’t have it both ways.
In this Holy Week, let’s allow the Holy Spirit to clean out the trash that our flesh accumulates in our souls so that Jesus’ resurrection life can wholly transform us. Indeed, the works of the flesh have to die to the resurrection life of Jesus!
