New Beginnings

We sold our church building & we’re moving to a new building nearby. We’ve been in our old building for almost 30 years, so there are plenty of memories from those years. I’m excited for our new building & starting a new chapter!

Thinking about this new chapter, I’m reminded of Joshua leading the Israelites to possess the Promised Land. When God leads us to start a new chapter, let’s be like Joshua:

  • We can do it!! In Numbers 13-14, Joshua & Caleb were the can-do spies but the other 10 spies were despondent & faith-less
  • Keep going!! Joshua had some setbacks before conquering the Promised Land. There was disobedience & duplicity among he Israelites, but Joshua didn’t quit
  • Look to God!! In Joshua 10, God made time stop so that Joshua could finish a battle & defeat his enemy. God helps us possess His promises to us!

Hot Topic: more & better

Have you ever been mad at God for seemingly not coming through with one of His promises?  Have you ever prayed one God’s promises fervently & it didn’t turn out like you had prayed?

This happened to me a few years ago on a group trip with my mom. We were leading a team of maybe 200 people in Romania & I had ardently prayed that no one get their airline ticket nor passport stolen / lost (pre- 9/11). Sure enough, one of travelers had her ticket & passport stolen. I spent the next 24-36 hours trying to get her a replacement passport & the US embassy wasn’t helpful. I felt like an awful failure when I let Sheila know that I wasn’t able to get a replacement passport & that she would likely have to stay several days in Romania & work with the embassy on her own for the passport thing.

Needless to say, I was really ticked off with God – didn’t answer my fervent prayers, didn’t keep His promise, failed at a point of great need, etc.
I was totally lit for several days until I learned that Sheila made it safely back to the US without a passport, just a Xerox copy of her passport (before the 9/11 attack). I was entirely dumbfounded, stunned & altogether speechless. When I tried to challenge God about keeping His word & promises, He totally arrested me with this question:  Sarah,  which method of answering your prayer was more glorifying to Me – the maintenance way that you asked or the miracle solution that I orchestrated?
Let’s be mindful that God’s ways & methods far surpass anything we could imagine, suppose or propose. God does more & better than we can ask or think!

a good laugh

I was recently reading about Abraham & I was pleasantly surpised to notice that when the angel spoke to Abraham about having a son in his old age, he literally fell to the ground laughing!!  And when Sarah heard that she would carry a baby in her very old age, she also busted out laughing!  Both parents had a good laugh at what seemed totally impossible, but what was also probably the biggest desire in their lives.  Perhaps they had been disappointed when year after year, Sarah never became pregnant until it seemed to be too late.  Maybe the only reply that they had left to their decades of disappointment was to laugh at what seemed to be absurd.

Nevertheless, God is faithful to His promises even when they seem impossible & Sarah became pregnant.¬† Its completely funny to recognize that God’s name for their son was Isaac, which means¬†laughter¬† .¬† The decades of disappointment had been replaced with laughter for everyone.¬† Please be encouraged that God is faithful to His promises even when they seem impossible.¬† Maybe one day, you’ll look at the impossible & laugh with faith, knowing that nothing is impossible with God.
