When I was growing up, my dad would take me to garage sales, art galleries, museums, estate sales, hospital visits, nursing homes, etc with an occassional stop at Arby’s for a jamocha shake & potatoe cakes – yum!! So during my childhood, I was around lots of people who were very different than me. It helped me a lot that my dad was very personable & never knew a stranger because I was realtively quiet & reflective.
As an adult, I also have the privilege of getting to meet lots of people from all walks of life. I meet poor folk & prosperous folk, educated & uneducated people, polite & rude folk, insightful & obtuse . . . . Some people are alot like me & we see life from a similar perspective. In contrast, I’m also around alot of people who are very different from me & I love this!! What is wonderful about each person that I meet, is that they are deeply valuable, highly esteemed and massively loved by our Heavenly Father. Let’s be intentional that we cultivate connections with people are different from us & make the committment to express genuine love regardless of our commonalities or differences!
There were a few years when my parents bought a fresh tree for Christmas. Unfortunately, we didn’t stick the stump in a bucket of water so it quickly became a fire hazard, a delight to my dad & me, since we were both pyromaniacs ,)
By the grace of God & only God, we never burned down our house, with a few close calls.
So keeping things fresh is important & here are some suggestions:
Keep your mistakes fresh & new – stale & repeat mistakes aren’t helpful
Forgiveness needs to stay fresh – crusty forgiveness usually becomes brittle & broken
Love Jesus with fresh ideas – routines can help us be consistent but fresh & present love keeps us intimate with Jesus & sometimes the best way to love Jesus is to love people well
Fresh thinking is helpful for resolving old problems – consider reading some books that you don’t normally read
Fun friends – meeting new people can be challenging & rewarding; consider some extra listening & open heart to make fresh connections with new friends 🙂
Coffee, tea, hot water, soda, . . . . . whatever floats your boat, in this holiday season, let’s be sure that we dial in some time and attention to hanging out with Jesus. Here are a few ideas for your consideration:
go through the drive through coffee place, collect your coffee / beverage and then pull into a parking space for a few minutes to enjoy some pause and fellowship with Jesus
go to a concert or Christmas production that you have nothing to do with for the simple purpose of being present with Jesus in this season
wake up 10-15min before everyone else to be still and quiet – giving Jesus your presence as a present
ask the Holy Spirit to help you to pay attention and increase your awareness of Jesus’ presence in your daily living
pray with someone, briefly and sincerely, who expresses a need
take a walk at night (in a safe neighborhood or park) and think about the shepherds in the field who received the angelic announcement about Jesus’ birth – what a SHOCKER!!!!!
be in church – there’s a good chance that someone there will be talking about Jesus during this month ,)
do something nice for someone who doesn’t have the ability to repay you 🙂
