“Jehoshaphat was afraid & turned his attention to see the Lord & proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.” 2Chron 20:3
Being afraid is a universal experience to every human & maybe there are times when we have more or less fear. But fear is not a rare emotion in our human living. What we do with fear is more important, in my opinion, than the actual fear. So when I read about Jehoshaphat being afraid & turning his attention to the Lord, it gives me some good input on what to do with fear. I’m thinking also that this could be helpful for you too!
Rather than biting your nails, fretting, getting jittery, nervous eating, etc, when we have times or experiences with fear, let’s be certain that our default instinct is to turn our attention to God, remembering that nothing causes God to “bite His nails.”
My daughter has her driver’s permit, so we are starting the “learning to drive” adventure. The first time I rode with her, I knew that my real-time prayer life would be dramatically increasing. Of course I’m praying immediately for her skills to improve but I’m also praying for peace in my heart and for the people driving on the road with us 🙂
Recently, I began to think about this adventure in a different way. Rather than being frazzled by this season, I’m choosing to see that she’s a chauffeur in training. Ok, maybe not my chauffeur, but if I appreciate that Jesus never leaves her, then she can be His chauffeur & that perspective helps me a lot!
Taking that a little further, Jesus is always with us as well, no matter what’s happening or not! If we are Jesus’ chauffeur, this means that He gets to tell us where we’re going & we would be wise to solicit His input on how to get to His destinations!

It’s not 9am yet & I think I’ve already endured a week’s worth of stress. Ok, that’s an overreaction, but my daughter just drove me home & she’s just beginning to learn how to drive. We also just dropped off my son for his first day of high school, so I’m sitting at home endeavoring to calm my frayed nerves. Normally, I’m a relatively relaxed person but I can get pretty jittery when it comes to stuff with my kids.
Seems to me that we have have areas in our lives that make us jittery & it’s not possible to always avoid these stressors. Sometimes we have to go through stress & get better at managing it rather than stress managing us.
So here are some pointers that could be helpful to you or someone you know who’s in a stressful season:
it can help to take a pause, close your eyes & catch your breath
consider if you’re stressed about an event or if there’s a deeper issue that is happening in your emotions / thoughts
stress is usually limited in time or to a situation – it can pass or get smaller when we think about the big picture
pray & ask the Holy Spirit to help you have peace that is bigger / stronger than any stress
Sometimes stress can help us lean into God more & rely on ourselves less. In this context, God can get some excellent mileage out of stress & we can have a more intimate relationship with God. That seems to be one of the things that God does so very well in our lives – turning to broken into beautiful & stress into cozy communion with the Holy Spirit!

This morning, I read about how Abraham’s servant set off on a journey to find a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s son. This servant was tasked by Abraham with clear & precise instructions to find a wife for Isaac & the servant was rightfully jittery with such heavy duty responsibility. Nevertheless, the servant moved forward & found exactly God’s provision for Isaac’s wife.
Here are a few helpful points:
*take one step at a time – sometimes the big picture can get overwhelming, so decide to take one nibble at a time
*test the waters – Abraham’s servant asked Rebekah for a drink of water to open the possibility of discussing her future; he didn’t jump in the deep end with his initial words
*trust God – Abraham’s servant relied on Gods loving kindness to Abraham to find Isaac’s wife; God has a good track record & God is faithful!
*follow through – keep taking one step at a time until the final completion; don’t quit before the end 🙂
I’m not a big fan of being nervous. I usually mess stuff up when I’m nervous, make goofy mistakes & generally present myself poorly. I was on an important phone conversation earlier this week & I found myself getting nervous, stuttering, stumbling & sounding less than brainy :/
So what to do about being nervous? Here are a few helpful ideas:
*prepare ahead of time – usually my biggest downfall
*pray and ask God to give you peace
*stay focused on what’s immediate, not getting overwhelmed by what’s massive
*trust that God is bigger than your humanity & flaws – message out a mess, testimony from a test & redemption from rubble 🙂
Tonight at our church, my husband & I are talking about sex. We’re splitting the audience so he’ll take the guys & I’ll take the chicks. For some quick insight, I HATEtalking about this subject. In high school, I scheduled all of my orthodontist appointments to happen during the human sexuality class. Nevertheless, it’s a really important topic and the society in which I live seems to be more & more hyper-sexual.
As I’ve been thinking about what to say, I’ve found it really encouraging that the Bible is not mute on this topic. In fact, it has lots to say about it & you might consider looking into a few of the following references for some reflection: Leviticus 18, Matt 5:27-29, Rom 1:21-32, 1 Cor 6:12-20 & 1 Cor 7:1-5
Of course I could turn this particular post into something steamy & controversial, but I’d prefer to let the Bible do the talking for me on this topic. Of course you are very free & entirely accurate to call me chicken 🙂
I had some experiences today that had the potential to make me nervous, jittery & anxious – all for good reasons that don’t need the details here. But I think that we all struggle with being anxious, nervous & jittery for various reasons. Hopefully, this might provide some helpful ideas:
It always helps me when I’m anxious or jittery to take a minute & fix my thoughts on Jesus – gives me some good perspective
When I’m nervous, I want to be mindful that I’m not snappy with people because, then I feel bad in addition to feeling nervous
If I have some long-term nervousness going on, sometimes I’ll stop & make a list of the good things that God has done (inventory God’s faithfulness); this helps me to adjust my trust off of the anxiety & onto Jesus
asking a friend to pray can also be very helpful
God also reminded me one time that He has more answers than I have questions & that He has more solutions than I have problems – that was super helpful!!
Ps 55:22 says to cast our cares on the Lord because He cares for us.
