having some fun with failure

To me, fun and failure don’t really belong in the same sentence.  One of the only times that I’ve experienced failure and its been fun is when I bowl.  For whatever reason, whenever I bowl, I laugh my head off.  Since I don’t really have much opportunity to bowl, I’m a miserable failure with bowling & it makes me TOTALLY laugh at myself in a really healthy way.  Except for bowling, fun and failure aren’t very complementary – but here’s the catch:  they can be.

I’ve had varying degrees of failure in my life.  I’ve failed in various sports, failed in some different school work, failed in some relational contexts, failed with some financial decisions and more.  Here’s the good part of failure – its the bottom.  Furthermore, we often seem to learn more from our failures than our successes.  Success feels better than failure, but failure because of both the feelings and consequences causes us to adapt, change, grow, adjust and improve.

Here’s the tricky part of failure:  just because you’ve experienced failure doesn’t mean that you are a failure.  The verb isn’t the same as the noun.  Sometimes, if we’ve had some catastrophic failure or a whole bunch of failures, it can be easy to transfer the action to our identity.  This is contrary to what Paul says in Romans 8:37 – that we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us.

Hold your head up high when you fail.  Its an opportunity to grow and get better.  Through Jesus’ love for us, we are never failures, even when we blow it.

insights on my kids

Watching my kids grow is simply fascinating – full of delight, awe, pleasant surprises & very astounding.  Here are some recent developments:

David – wants to buy a box of girlscout cookies & keep them for awhile & then re-sell them for more than he bought them for.  He COMPLETELY came up w this scheme on his own.  Furthermore, he also has the plan to sell part of the ABC juice (apples, beets & carrots – uber healthy) that we make to mimi (grandma) twice a month to make money.  This entrepeuner thing just surfaced recently.  Needless to say, I’m speechless bc i didn’t even consider thinking this way until at least high school & probably more like post college.  (pawns in chess are ponds)

Isabell:  the long hair is pretty much lost on me, given that i’ve enjoyed short hair & its simplicity for close to 2 decades.  She is growing her hair to cut if off & donate it to locks of love for kids w cancer.  Furthermore, its really cool to watch her confidence grow as she overcomes various insecurities to achieve goals that she has set for her self – selling girlscout cookies has been the recent platform for this personal growth.  I see her thinking, growing & living in the present w great contentment.

Benji:  everything he does has some wiggle (except now as I’m watching him play Reece in chess – take it back, he just went to the bathroom).  Anyways, he’s wonderfully generous & relational, with eyes full of life, creativity & happiness.  And today, we got to ski w Benji & he was simply fantastic.  I love that he watches his older brother to grow, learn & play.  I’m glad he’s a kind person because a mean person with his intelligence would be scarey.

I’m blown away by my kids.

Finished my Greek final

I’m sitting in class having (participle of time) just finished (perfect stative) my final.  We did (aorist) alot of work related to Romans 5-8 (dependant clause) & I’m kind of pumped because I can basically read much of Romans 5-8 in greek (content clause).  As a side note, I’ve memorized (perfect, consummative) so much grammar stuff that if you were talk to me now (conditional clause), you might rightfully think that I’m a bit on the freak side (possibly optative but probably indicative).

Holy Cow!!!  Whoever thinks of this stuff is really smart – would that I could attain such intellectual heights.  😉

Needless to say, I’ll be happy to head home in the snow & brace for tomorrow’s onslaught.  I also have to say that I’ve been having some completely outrageous times w God, hearing Him w tremendous clarity, sensing His presence, connecting to His love . . . . . in my heart, I’m so captivated by Him.

God applause

applauseIn an effort to help us give God some applause & to get in the thankful mode, let me give you a few things for which I’m thankful & then give you the opportunity to leave a comment with some things you’re thankful for.  I’m thankful for:

  • God’s love for me – this year has been thoroughly mind blowing in experiencing His love
  • getting to go to Ethiopia – a long-time dream come true;  this was a real honor for me
  • family – always keeping you on your toes or knees depending on what’s happening
  • encouragement & support – lots of folk saying & doing cool things
  • friends – this year has been somewhat of a long-needed breakthrough for me in this area
  • greek – how cool that I’ve had the opportunity to grow & learn in studying the Bible!
  • health – can I just tell you that I have biceps?  I couldn’t tell I had these until this year!  Health is also useful for:  snowboarding, travelling, keeping up w the kids, thinking & much more
  • prayer – what a majestic adventure

That’s a start for me.  What are some things you’re thankful for?  Maybe the rest of us could get some ideas from you! 🙂

time for FUN

i wish

i wish

I think God is thoroughly amazing!  He has designed each of us w such unique personalities – completely incredible!  While I tend to be a somewhat reflective, I love that He gives us what we need, when we need it, despite our natural bends.  Here’s what I mean:

This week has been a bit intense – I had my Greek mid-term (EXTREMELY stressful since I’m trying to just pass the class), preaching Wed night, Senate elections for Isabell & David’s school, along w preaching Sun.  Needless to say, I’ve been pretty focused & didn’t know how much of a break I needed.  Yesterday, was a BLAST!!!  My friend, Janice & I went snowboarding yesterday – 1st day of the year & had a fantastic time w no major injuries (not going to discuss the “injury from snowboarding” topic).  I got to ride fast & furious, catching no edges & it was completely great – didn’t know how much I needed to blow off some steam!

That’s what I think is cool about God – He gives us what we need, when we need it.  So regardless of your natural bend, be sure to give God space & opportunity to give you what you need, even if you think you don’t need it.

What have you noticed God giving you over the last few weeks?

Louisiana – fun times!

I’m sitting in the New Orleans airport w Reece & I’m thanking God for the conference we just attended.  We heard some really great speakers & got to have some great God time, as well as hook up w some long lost friends & make some new friends as well.  Getting out every so often is really refreshing – it can give you a new lease on life!

We’re really looking forward to getting home & being w our kids – I made mom look at all my kid pics on my blackberry during breakfast.  This is one way that I know I miss them!

God really spoke to me & encouraged me during this time away – some I’ll share a bit later.

Things I’m looking forward to:

  • members class in the morning
  • getting into Philippians again
  • working on the Lord’s Prayer:  give us today our daily bread (so excellent!!!!)
  • getting to work off some of the delic food we ate down here
  • putting my kids to bed tonight
  • hearing God
  • worship this weekend!
