hot topic: laughter

Life can be very serious & ever so often, we all need a good laugh.  So today’s hot topic is an attempt to provide some comic relief.  Here are just a few brief & funny traveling stories:

  • wrong week:  last year, I was scheduled to go to Dallas & had a 7am flight (which means that I leave my house no later than 5am).  When I got to the airport, I was having trouble getting the kiosk to print my boarding pass.  When I went to the airline person to help me, she ran my confirmation number through the computer & helped me to see that I was a week early – my flight was booked for the following week;  I chalked it up in the “practice” column.  Consider my husband’s surprise when I walked in the house less than an hour after I left, ready to take the kids to school that morning ,)
  • buddhist monks:  one time I was in the waiting lounge in the Calcutta airport & there were around 6-12 monks who were all seated together.  My friend dared me to jump in the middle of them so he could take a picture of me with them.  I took the dare & the monks scattered faster than cockroaches running away from light.  I learned that they had all taken a vow not to touch a woman & I almost caused them to break this vow with my silliness
  • chief safety officer:  I flew on a commercial plane once (oversees) when the pilot came out of the cockpit on an active runway to close the front door of our airplane – he seemed pretty casual about the whole thing

be brave

Yesterday, my husband & I celebrated Valentines Day by doing some skiining / snowboarding together & we had a blast!  During the day, I kept seeing this run that I wanted to try because it had lots of powder on it & looked like it could be really fun!  So on my last run, we tried it & it was more than what I thought:  there was part of it that was a tiny bit of a steep drop between a couple of trees.  Ok, here’s the deal – I’ve been snowboarding for more than 7 years now & while I have zero olympic aspirations, I’m also better than I think sometimes.  When I looked at the miniature drop between the trees, I got really nervous, but then I thought about it, did some mental coaching & came through uninjured 🙂

Here are a few helpful ideas from my snowboarding adventure yesterday about being brave:

  • don’t psych yourself out – sometimes we make things bigger than they are
  • think about your successes from the past – this helps to build present confidence
  • be with “can-do” people – my husband was cheering for me, “Sarah, you got this!!”
  • fundamentals – think about what you need to do rather than what you shouldn’t do (this helps ALOT when you get in really intense moments)
  • remember the Sara Bareilles song, “Brave”  🙂

Don’t Freak Out!!

“LET GO!!!!!”  When I was younger, I went paragliding in China & had virtually no instruction for the paragliding adventure.  Whatever training the paragliding “company” did was in Mandarin & my Mandarin skills don’t have any paragliding vocabulary.  Needless to say, I wasn’t prepared for this undertaking, which of course didn’t stop me – smile.  I strapped into the harness thing, proceeded to jump off the mountain and I had this TOTALLY SHOCKING experience, which I later learned was a thermal.  I caught a wind gust that was like rocket thrusting me straight up!  My mind said, “LET GO!!” and then I thought about my options: let go & fall or hold on & keep going up.  I decided that I preferred the lifting experience over the falling experience, so I held on.  Let’s make the same kind of decision about Jesus when we get in a crisis.  Hold on to Jesus & He will lift us up!

ps – I had an amazing ride with my paragliding experience 🙂

basketball update

My daughter’s basketball game was postponed on Thurs night because of weather complications, so I’ve got some time to work on my self-control efforts (her next game isn’t until Dec).  In the meantime, watch this video for how I think about myself with basketball (laugh, laugh, chuckle, chuckle)

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Loving People

Whenever I get my hair fixed, it’s always lots of fun because of the different kinds of people I get to meet – some are intense, some are bubbly, some have an über dry whit, others are reflective & observant . . . . . So many different kinda of people & all uniquely wonderful. So whenever I get my hair done, it’s always like a party day to celebrate people & enjoy such unique & delightful personalities. It makes me thankful that God is amazingly creative, extravagant, gracious & most of all, loving!

A fond memory from my dad

I had a friend remind me recently about a fond memory I have of my dad that might be fun for you to read about. When I was in elementary school, my dad bought a REALLY bright yellow jumpsuit & totally enjoyed it. He liked it so much that he took it on a family vacation trip to Italy. It was pretty humorous to watch this tall American man with total white hair in a BRIGHT yellow jumpsuit with white tube socks & black shoes. As he walked down the street probably the best entertainment value was to watch the Italians look at him with envy over his yellow jumpsuit ,)
Dad liked this jumpsuit so much that he pretty much wore it wherever he went or doing whatever – hospital visits, furniture refinishing, craw dad hunting, office attire & more. Thankfully, I don’t remember that he preached in the top banana ,)

HELP!!!!!

I like to feel good & one of the things that helps me to feel good is when I get to help people.  So if I’m gut level honest, sometimes my motives for helping people are selfish 🙂

Now that I’ve put that out there, I also want to give you a chance to feel good by ordering your own 2013 Saving Moses calendar!!  Please don’t fight the urge to visit the link at the end & be sure to pass this along to your friends as well, so they can also feel the love 🙂

that was stupid

When I was growing up, people would often comment about how serious I was & to this day, I can still get quagmired in the intense bog.  One of the things that helps me to lighten up is to laugh at myself – to not take myself so seriously.  So from time to time, I review some of the silly, goofy & even stupid things that I’ve done just to lighten my thinking.  Here’s a sampling:

  • For Thanksgiving one year, I had heard that convection baking was superior to the regular oven baking.  Of course I didn’t get any more information & proceeded to burn my turkey, sufficient only for a burnt offering.  We didn’t eat turkey that Thanksgiving ,)
  • my first car never had an oil change in 3 years – didn’t know that was important :/
  • I used to work in a data entry position & would take messages for my co-workers.  I decided to find the phone number of a local mortuary & leave one a my co-workers a message to call Myra Mains with just the phone number for the mortuary ,)
  • I tried to toast whipped cream on a pie – we renamed the outcome to “puddle pie”

Laughter is good medicine!!

Weird people :)

From time to time, I have the opportunity to interact with all different kinds of people & some of them kind be a little tricky. In the past, I used to get more frustrated with people who can be difficult & weird. One of the things that I’m learning is that everyone is important & valuable even if they can be a little strange. I always want to be able to give people the benefit of the doubt & respectful regardless of how difficult they might be. Sometimes I do this better than others. So my take away is that it’s important to go the extra mile & while this can be hard, it’s the better decision than to give back the hardship someone may be giving to you – smile 🙂

something tasty

Image I mentioned the other day that I was making a lemon cake & had some fairly positive feedback on how it turned out, so I’ve decided to momentarily diverge and pass along the recipe.  Please note that I make no claims on it being healthy – it’s not.  And I got it off of the bag of lemons that I bought at Walmart, so don’t have any “Martha Stewart” expectations ,)

Lemon Pudding Cake:

3 lemons

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup AP flour

1/4 tspn salt

3 large eggs separated

1 cup milk at room temp

4 Tblspn butter melted & cooled

Preheat oven to 300f, butter 8×8 inch baking pan.  Finely grate 2 tspn zest and squeeze 1/3 cup juice from the lemons, set aside.  Combine dry ingredients, whisk together yolks, milk, butter, lemon zest & juice;  add to flour mixture.  Whisk to combine.  Beat egg whites to soft peaks and fold into batter.  The batter will be thin.  Pour into prepared baking dish & bake for about 35-40min until golden.  I’d recommend chilling before serving.  Enjoy!!
