fresh

Old and New

Happy 2019! Starting a new day, a new month and a new year is a nice way to think of a fresh start. In some respects, a new year is a little bit like a do-over, taking some of the mishaps, failures, lessons, progress and successes of 2018 and making improvements on these for 2019.

Where you’ve had failures & disasters in 2018, be careful not to allow shame, embarassment, defeat, fear or insecurity define your perspective on these things in 2019. Sometimes it’s helpful to think of failures, defeats, disasters and mishaps in terms of practice and progress. In this way, let’s make new mistakes in 2019 and not the same ones from 2018.

Where you’ve had success, improvement, maturation & progress, let’s take such momentum into 2019 and keep going! There’s a good chance that God would like to build on these things from 2018 and expand those victories!

It’s a new day, new month and new year – all aligned with God’s work because He makes all things new (Isaiah 43:18), including you and me!

Not Yesterday

The past is a really interesting thing to consider. Like me, you likely have some very fond memories as well as some experiences that you’d rather forget. And today is a new day, with new mercies, new experiences, new people, new minutes, new activities, new adventures, . . . . lots of new for new days!

And may we never forget that God’s mercies are new every morning because the faithfulness of God is infinite. Let’s allow each day to be new & have a fresh start. Yesterday is over & today is a new day čÖé

Keep Fresh ,)

There were a few years when my parents bought a fresh tree for Christmas. Unfortunately, we didn’t stick the stump in a bucket of water so it quickly became a fire hazard, a delight to my dad & me, since we were both pyromaniacs ,)
By the grace of God & only God, we never burned down our house, with a few close calls.

So keeping things fresh is important & here are some suggestions:

  • Keep your mistakes fresh & new – stale & repeat mistakes aren’t helpful
  • Forgiveness needs to stay fresh – crusty forgiveness usually becomes brittle & broken
  • Love Jesus with fresh ideas – routines can help us be consistent but fresh & present love keeps us intimate with Jesus & sometimes the best way to love Jesus is to love people well
  • Fresh thinking is helpful for resolving old problems – consider reading some books that you don’t normally read
  • Fun friends – meeting new people can be challenging & rewarding; consider some extra listening & open heart to make fresh connections with new friends čÖé

Let’s keep fresh & perky čÖé

be fresh ,)

These are a few of my favorite things: ┬ápeaches, pho, fresh coffee, clean sheets, snuggling with my kids, a good read, a heartfelt conversation, prayer, ┬á. . . . . And one generality that holds true for all of these things is “staying fresh”. ┬áFor example, I recently bought like two boxes of peaches because I know that we are coming to the end of peach season & I ABSOLUTELY LOVE peaches. ┬áBut the problem is that these peaches are getting “tired” – not as good as when they’re at the peak of freshness & season. ┬áPho is another example of keeping stuff fresh – whenever I bring home leftover pho & it sits in the refrigerator, it gets gross.

I think this is also true in our relationship with Jesus.  A stale, old and tired walk with Jesus can get pretty ugly.  So here are a few ideas that could be helpful in keeping fresh with Jesus:

  • Bible reading: ┬áchange your translation from time to time
  • spiritual conversations: ┬átalk with a friend about Jesus and what you like about Him
  • take a bath: ┬ásometimes we need to wash off some dirt & road wear;
  • fasting / prayer: ┬áperiodically, it helps me to do something extra (fast a meal or a few days, take a lunch to pray, look for someone for whom to pray
  • time: ┬áit always takes my breath away when I consider that God considers my presence to be a present ,)

Hello Again!

YAHOOO! We get to launch a new year today & that makes me very excited!! It’s a new year to try new ideas, meet new people, solidify the lessons of the past & possibly explore some new countries. In Isaiah 43:19 it talks about God doing a new thing. May this year for you & me be full of God’s new & wonderful things – happy New Year!
