I go through seasons in my life where everything seems manageable. This means that I have a balance with my workload, time, responsibilities, family stuff, travel, etc. And then I go through seasons that seem very unbalanced: too much work, not enough time, overwhelming responsibilities, unresolved family challenges and maybe a host of other hotspots. So in these seasons, it’s easy for me to feel like I’m drowning and I can’t manage everything – there’s not enough of me to adequately match everything that’s being demanded or required.
In these seasons, it helps me to focus on what’s immediately in front of me and taking one day at a time. Indeed, I don’t have the resources, wisdom, energy or wherewithall to get very far into the future and it can overwhelm me when I try. Maybe this is why God did the manna thing for Israel, giving adequate supply of bread for each day. This forced the Israelites to trust God on a daily basis and this is a helpful mindset that we can also choose for today. Let’s thank God for giving us daily provisions, adequate for each day 🙂
Commercials on tv & the web make it seem like we never have enough. From these marketing efforts, it seems like we don’t have enough status, popularity, image, health, time, etc. I think we often believe these distortions, even subconsciously, or such marketers would try different tactics. But their sales efforts don’t really satisfy that “enough” chasm in our souls.
So what makes us full? What satisfies? What truly fulfills us?
I don’t think anyone or anything will ultimately satisfy us because of how we are created by God. Indeed, it’s been my experience that I’m the most fulfilled & richly satisfied when I’m attentive to the Holy Spirit. And being aware that the Holy Spirit is always with me let’s me live in a healthy equanimity that nothing human can provide. The Holy Spirit is enough for me.
Do you ever feel like you’re not enough? Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough energy, wisdom, stamina, etc? Sometimes I feel like Bilbo Baggins when he says , “. . . like butter scraped over too much bread.” We all have stuff for which we’re responsible, but sometimes all of these responsibilities can seem overwhelming. So what should we do on the days when we feel spread too thin?
Here are some ideas that might help:
Pray & ask for divine help, then watch for the ways that the Holy Spirit will give you help with strength & wisdom or even eliminate some of the demands of that day
Pause – take a step back & consider if you can let a few things go to make life more manageable & less insane
Play – the last thing I feel like doing when I’m stressed & max’ed out is playing & yet sometimes being playful is the exact stress reliever I need to stay the course & not disappear into a mountain hideaway.
Let’s remember that we always have access to Heavenly Help for wisdom, strength & divine help 🙂
Right out of the gate, you need to know that I’m EXTREMELY amped up about this post. I’m amped up, because it seems to me that virtually no one in the international community is making a REALLY IMPORTANT CONNECTION. Here’s the deal: ebola is an epidemic that has been ravaging three countries in West Africa (Sierra Leone, Guinea & Liberia) for this entire year. The international community has become increasingly attentive and responsive to this awful disease that currently has no known cure & with an 70% mortality rate. Ebola is really serious!
But here’s the WAKE UP CALL: While the US has currently given over $200million for ebola aid & assistance, China has given less than $10million to the ebola crisis up to today. The reason I’m so amped up about this discrepency is because China is the leading economic partner for Sierra Leone, Guinea & Liberia. Feel free to research the recent economic agreements that China has negotiated with these three nations in the last 5 years & you’ll rapidly see that China is acquiring vast amounts of wealth & natural resources from these nations, but up to this day, China has been shamefully silent and virtually absent from providing any noteworthy support against ebola.
My rant in this post isn’t based solely on Judeo Christian values. My rant in this post is based on human dignity & I would urge you to put pressure on the Chinese government to save their own economic face & put some hefty finances toward stopping the spread of ebola in these three nations. Please post this blog on your Facebook page, pass it along to your friends and let’s bring to international public awareness this shameful neglect from the second biggest economy in the world, China.
