all of you is meaningful :)

Unimportant, irrelevant, insignificant and altogether meaningless.  Sometimes I have conversations and interactions with people where I try to figure out where we might have some common ground and find something about which we can both enjoy discussing.  When I talk with my friends whose kids attend the same school with my kids, we often find the common ground related to school stuff.  When I’m speaking in a church or at a conference and connecting with people in these environments, we often talk about God and the Bible.  But not everyone wants to talk about school stuff, or Bible stuff, knitting, or how to get in better shape, snowboarding, or Soren Kierkegaard or God or prostitutes having babies that need safety and protection,  . . . .   We all have things that we are passionate about that aren’t interesting or meaningful to other people.  But here’s the totally cool piece:

All of you is meaningful to God.  God is altogether interested in your life and everything in which you’re interested.  God has the capacity to be fully engaged, interested and participatory in every area and interest of your life!  All of you is meaningful!!

stupid mistakes

I recently used a parking meter for an appt that I was in and I skimped on the meter.  Sure enough, my meeting went longer than I expected & voila, I found the ever lovely parking ticket on my windshield.  As I looked at the ticket, I figured out that if I would have added 50cents to the meter, I could have avoided the $25 ticket.  I hate making these kinds of mistakes – where I try to skimp with time or money & wind up spending more;  hate those kinds of mistakes.

So to get the most out of this experience, here are my learning points that might be helpful to you as well:

  • margin – give yourself some cushion so that you don’t spend more time & money than is necessary
  • grace – berating yourself for mistakes is wasted emotional energy;  learn the lesson & move on
  • change – repeating the same errors is stupid;  learning & changing is smart 🙂

Too fast

I’m a speed fiend – I like fast: fast snowboarding, fast travel, fast driving, fast food (sometimes), fast swimming & speedy progress. Being fast yields itself well to the world in which we live. We like microwaves, no lines, phone apps that help us avoid traffic & almost anything that makes us quicker, more efficient & speedy.
The problem with speed is that everything can become increasingly blurry, the faster our lives move. Speed enables us to overlook things, of which some are important beyond description. There is definitely such a thing as too slow, but let’s be careful that our lives get so fast that we neglect to live & love.

insomnia

Is insomnia ever a good thing?  When I do some int’l travel or when I have alot of things on my mind, I can have a few challenges with the insomnia thing & if I’m honest with you, I don’t like it one bit.  My brain is hazy, my conversations seem sluggish and I’m just slow.  Sometimes at like 1:30 or 2am, I’ll pop in a movie that puts me to sleep, like Return of the Jedi.

But there’s a “person” for whom insomnia is no problem.  Consider Ps 121:3,  “He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.”  I think this is uber cool – God who watches over me doesn’t sleep.  God is keeping us, watching over us and is attentive to us 24/7.  So for God, insomnia is no problem 🙂

Maybe this is kind of like nightcare/

😀

Getting Better!

There are lots of areas in my life that I’m trying to improve: fitness, cooking, relationships, ministry, leadership & more. If I’m not careful, all of this could be overwhelming. But this is something my dad would always say, “inch by inch, it’s a cinch but yard by yard it’s hard.”
So I’m making incremental changes & starting to see some improvements. I can tell that my health is getting better, my cooking has fewer burning torches, some relationships have been more stable & there are some other good things that are going on. So let’s keep our focus on God, remain thankful & keep growing inch by inch 🙂

different can be better

I was having a nice conversation with a friend & we were talking about how much we enjoy our daily prayer times with God.  She said something that stuck with me in a funny way.  She said, “I wish I didn’t have to leave God’s sweet presence when I have to move into the day’s activities & demands.”  It was an interesting comment that has lingered in my mind for more than a year.  When she first said this, I readily agreed with her with sadness.  But after thinking about this for a few weeks, I started to consider that if God is everywhere at all times, then we never leave God’s presence.

Perhaps we get to discover God’s presence in different contexts:  busy, still, anxious, peaceful, uncertain, stable, clear, restless, hopeful, discouraged, hurt, loved, weakness, strength, joy, pain, . . . . .   Maybe we are learning to sense God in lots of different ways & contexts not only in the normal & expected ways 🙂

Being happy any place & any time

I just want to be happy! We’ve all heard this & probably even said it a few times ourselves. Some people seem to be more naturally proned to being happy & maybe they’re just optimists. Or, maybe they know the secret of being thankful, even when it’s not Thanksgiving. When you find yourself in a funk, start thinking of the things for which you can be grateful – the more you do this, it’s highly possible that your happiness quotient will increase. Another secret to be happy relates to being generous, but that’s for another day 🙂

driven or invited?

a violent landing or a gentle alighting?  My husband & I have a few days in the mountains to celebrate our 20th anniversary & I’m watching the snow quietly sift through the sky to gently alight on the bright yellow aspens and dark green pines, dancing through the air to their final rest.  There’s a stillness and beauty to this routine and it makes me think of the times when I’ve watched a really powerful snow storm pound the ground with several inches every hour.  The wind drives the snow but the earth’s gravity is the steady invitation.  The driving wind can result in mangled flakes while the steady invitation lets each flake land as a gentle whole to the delight of observant spectators.

In our lives, we can be driven by our ambitions and desires, often landing at our destinations mangled, tangled and twisted up.  In contrast, we can follow Jesus’ invitation to grow closer to Him in the steps of our daily living.  Of course God can use our ambitions, drives and desires – but let’s never ignore God’s steady & continuous invitation to stay grounded in God’s presence 🙂

a good and proper insult

“Use the crosswalk, you  *=^%@(>*%!!!!”

I had a lady yell at me the other day for not using the crosswalk and of course I had a few choice words and actions with which I immediately wanted to “bless” her – smile.  Ever been in the same situation?  Of course we all have and here’s the real rub, she was right.  She could use some diplomacy improvements, but despite her methods, her observation was 100% accurate.  It’s unfortunate that we often get too offended from correction & someone’s obvious lack of diplomacy to learn, grow and improve.  If a person is trying to hurt you & be mean, maybe the best way to get even with them is to respond is with grace, poise and humility and maybe even repentence, when its appropriate.  I guess Jesus said that we should turn the other cheek for a good reason ,)

Force Multiplier :)

Recently, I was doing some volunteer work on a house of a flood victim from the horrific flooding that happened last month here in Colorado.  My specific assignment was to remove the carpet tack strips in the house that had been ruined from the water that had flooded the house.  I’ve never had any carpet tack experience so I just plopped on the floor with the metal wedge tool and tried to pry up the strips that were nailed to the floor.  I quickly found out that those little strips were extremely hard to get up & I just settled in my mind that this task was going to take a lot of time and work.  After about 30min of work & having only made about 18 inches of progress, an experienced construction guy came along & encouraged me to use a hammer with the metal wedge.  I asked if that would make the task easier & go more quickly to which he heartily replied, “YES!!!!”  So I grabbed a hammer, watched him for a few seconds, learned the technique & voila!!!  I was removing the carpet tack strips much FASTER!!  The hammer was a force multiplier!!

In our lives, we need lots of force multipliers to help our work be not only efficient but also highly EFFECTIVE!  Based on what the Bible says, wisdom is our force multiplier and through requesting & working with wisdom our lives can be suprenaturally effective.  Let’s frequently ask God to give us wisdom J
