Design Life

My husband was an engineer when we were first married & he schooled me on the idea of design life – everything is created with a design life (length of time for which it will be functional). This was a new idea to me when he explained it & now, I’m not as surprised when things stop working. For example, our phones have a design life of about 2years & the phone charger in my car seems to have a design life of maybe 3months :/
Thankfully, the design life of our relationship with God is eternal & infinite, a sharp contrast with everything human 🙂

Quick Health Tips

There is lots of talk about being healthy with our eating, exercise, sleep, etc. Personally, I can get overwhelmed with all of the info & trends flying around so I thought I’d make an EXTREMELY short list of essentials:
Physical body: drink primarily water & eat fresh
Relationships: forgive & forgive some more
Spiritual: daily Bible time, prayer & community / church

What else would you suggest?
Thanks for the input 🙂

Pay attention!!

The world in which we live would have us focusing on everything from ginsing knives to stolen passports in Malaysia! Look here! Listen to this! Give me your attention! FOCUS HERE!! There are lots of things that could easily grab our attention & if we aren’t careful, we could miss what’s really important.
I was reading in 1Kings 19 this morn about Elijah & how he was in a cave & he heard a MASSIVE wind (strong enough to break rocks), saw a fire that seemed to come from nowhere & experienced an earthquake. For me, all of those things packed in a short amount of time would totally freak me out! But Elijah was praying attention for that which was of greatest value – the still small voice.
Let’s determine to be like Elijah & not get distracted by crisis but rather lets remain attentive to God speaking into our lives! 🙂

hot topic: miracles

I hear and see lots of situations that need miracles – including stuff in my own life.  I was talking with God about this whole topic of needing miracles yesterday and I was expressing some of my own needs in my prayers.  It was an interesting time of prayer because I had the distinct impression that God is always doing miracles, even when we’re unaware.  Some of God’s miracles are small & we can easily overlook them because of the busy-ness and demands of everyday living.  Some of God’s miracles are camouflaged and aren’t as obvious because they’re not very dramatic.  Some of God’s miracles are so big that we altogether miss the experience because we can be so easily focused on something that’s relatively minor.  And sometimes we miss God’s miracles because we get too focused on our methods rather than leaving the method stuff in God’s hands.  So God is always doing miracles because that’s Who God is – miraculous!

Here are some miracles to consider:

  • strength to go through a difficult season
  • wisdom in areas where we are totally inept
  • time
  • provisions that come in unexpected ways
  • healing from bitterness, hurts, unforgiveness, etc
  • nautre – sunrises, sunsets, ocean tides, the immensity of the universe and the minuteness of a quark

Processing

When I was in high school, I had a photography class where we learned how to process film, back in the “dark ages.” I learned about chemicals, processing time, dark rooms, film, etc. It was a really cool experience to shoot a picture & then go through the process to make a print that I could show everyone – particularly if the picture was really cool. The outcome had the potential to far outweigh the process.
The same is true for us with patience, faithfulness, trusting God, maturity, faith, genuine love & all things that pertain the God. The process can get a little harrowing & tricky, but the outcomes are completely divine 🙂

the shortest distance

We’ve all heard the geometry postulate that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  With this premise, it’s logical to think about the things that we want & make a direct beeline toward these desires.  For example, if I want to serve a salad for dinner, I need lettuce, so I go to the grocery store to get the lettuce so I can make the salad.  Done.

It seems to me that having a close walk with God is an interesting adventure that doesn’t always seem to follow the same “straight line” thinking.  It seems to me that  being close to God is a daily journey that takes some unexpected twists and turns.  Growing close to God isn’t always a straight line journey – so let’s be open to how God leads us to be closer & closer to God day by day.

I need you

I grew up as a very independent person & felt very strongly that being independent was a noble aim. Now, I’m not so sure. I find myself frequently in situations where I’m inadequate, not smart enough nor strong enough to handle what’s happening. More often than not, the people who are around me have solutions I’ve not thought of, strength I don’t have & poise for the pressures of the moment. And if all of that isn’t enough, I hear that still, small & comforting voice in my heart saying, “I’m here.” I’m finding that we need each other & it’s a wonderful discovery!

Recovering from setbacks

Recently, one of my friends had her purse stolen in a rather traumatic way. When I think about how her purse was stolen, it creeps me out & it could be a real setback for my friend in many different ways (credit cards, wallet, phone, etc). Here are a few helpful ideas for overcoming setbacks:
*pray first – ask God for strength, wisdom, help , . . . .
*stay in the game – sometimes when something had happens, we can pause on the sidelines for too long
*dont let your heart get poisoned with bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, etc
*ask for God’s perspective – seeing things from God’s point of view helps us to keep our thinking in a more healthy & less destructive zone

Seek & Find

It’s always a great pleasure to find things that we look for. One time, I lost my wedding ring for like 2years. When we found it, there was MUCH REJOICING!!
Be mindful of the things for which you seek.
If you’re looking for popularity, you’ll find it & probably be disappointed.
If you’re looking to be wealthy, you might discover that money isn’t everything you thought it would be.
If you’re looking for success, you might find that it’s nothing more than a cat-and-mouse chase.
If you’re looking for applause & affirmation, you might discover that it costs more than it’s worth
If you look for God’s kingdom more than anything else, then everything else will fall in your lap 🙂
